How to Choose a Laptop

Laptop computers are useful and very popular because they allow the owner to use their computer in different locations. Especially since wireless access to the internet is becoming very common, it is great having a laptop, so you can go online anywhere.

When buying a laptop, the most important thing to know is: what are you going to use your laptop for? Perhaps you are going to use your laptop on the train on your daily commute, or during flights. In this case you will want a small, light laptop that isn`t going to weigh you down on your travels. You should not underestimate the amount of hassle and backache buying a large laptop can cause. The extra couple of inches on the screen may seem tempting, but the difference in size and weight will be huge. You will be much better off with a 13-inch screen or less.

Alternatively, you may only be using your laptop in your home. Maybe you are replacing a desktop computer because you want something that doesn`t have to have a permanent seat in the house. In this case a larger laptop is certainly an option. In particular, if you are intending to use your laptop as an entertainment device, for watching DVDs or online TV, then a large screen will be beneficial as it will allow you and sit further from the screen, making viewing more comfortable.

When selecting the exact specification of the laptop, a good rule is to buy the best you can afford. This will mean that your laptop will last longer before it becomes obsolete. However, there is no point in splashing out on a top-line processor if you are only going to use it for sending emails. The memory size is also important, and generally the more the better, although anything more than 4GB is pointless with a standard 32-bit system.

The hard drive size will determine how much data you can store, including photos, videos, and music. If you are going to be doing a lot of video editing you will want a large hard drive capacity, however, it can often prove cheaper to buy an additional external hard drive if you require a lot of space. Laptops are much harder to repair or upgrade than desktop computers, as all the components are crammed in so tightly. It is therefore wise to buy a brand you feel is reliable, or have bought good products from in the past.

You should also make sure the model you choose has the little features you want, for example Bluetooth, for connecting to devices like mobile phones. A particularly useful option, if you know exactly what you want, is to buy from a manufacturer that will build your laptop according to your specification, so you don`t have to settle for a model that has some things you want, and some you don`t.
